NYT: officials tie an executive close to Jensen Huang to Chinese intelligence; AWS grows 39%
The New York Times reports that US officials concluded an executive who grew close to Nvidia's Jensen Huang was a Chinese intelligence asset, and that Trump was briefed and did nothing. Amazon's cloud grew 39% while AI spending turned its free cash flow over the past year into a $42.4 billion outflow, and Reddit said it will go logged-in-only as search referrals fall. Mistral released the open weights of its trillion-parameter Mistral Large 4, OpenAI described how it monitors its frontier models for misalignment, WIRED reported that a contractor's Claude Code agent ran on a Pentagon network for two months, and Canada will take a stake in Cohere.

US officials concluded that an executive close to Nvidia's Jensen Huang was a Chinese intelligence asset, and Trump was briefed and took no action, the New York Times reports
The New York Times reports that US officials concluded Alice Huang, a top executive at Megaspeed, a Singapore-based data center company, was passing information to Beijing, and that she had grown close to Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang. The Times offered no evidence that he knew. Trump was briefed roughly a year ago and chose not to act, and Jensen Huang has not received a defensive briefing. Nvidia called the contacts ordinary customer meetings. The Commerce Department's Megaspeed investigation reportedly moved to the Justice Department this year.

Amazon's AWS grew 39% to $46.0 billion, but AI spending turned Amazon's free cash flow over the past year into a $42.4 billion outflow
Amazon said AWS sales rose 39% from a year earlier to $46.0 billion in the third quarter, a $184 billion annualized run rate, and total Bedrock token volume grew nearly 17 times. It spent $77.3 billion on property and equipment in the quarter, against $35.1 billion a year earlier, and still expects about $220 billion of cash capital expenditures in 2026. Free cash flow over the trailing twelve months swung to a $42.4 billion outflow, which Amazon said primarily reflects investments in artificial intelligence.

Reddit is shifting to a logged-in-only site, testing first outside the US, as search referrals fall by more than 1 million a week and daily users could drop
Reddit told shareholders it is shifting to a logged-in-only experience, starting with full tests in select markets outside the US this quarter, and said the change also protects access to its extremely valuable corpus of data. Search referrals have fallen by more than 1 million a week on average in October, and Reddit warned daily active uniques could drop by a low-double-digit percentage this quarter from 130 million if that rate continues. The company argued that "AI search solves a different problem than Reddit." Third-quarter revenue rose 53% to $895 million.

Mistral released the open weights of Mistral Large 4, a trillion-parameter model it says shows potential for uplift in real cyberattacks
Mistral released open weights for Mistral Large 4, nicknamed Le Chonk, its flagship 1-trillion-parameter multimodal model, which entered public preview earlier this month. Mistral says the model scores 51% on Artificial Analysis's Cyber Index and refuses 96.6% of malicious cyber requests on average, but that it sees "a potential for uplift to conduct real attacks" and is modifying its guardrails. The model is free to use and modify, but companies selling it as a hosted service need a separate commercial license.

OpenAI says its misalignment monitors now cover its frontier models far more widely, but paging is off for internal Codex traffic
OpenAI described the layered system it uses to watch its frontier models for misaligned behavior, and said the monitors now span training, evaluation, internal use and external deployment. When OpenAI replayed the Hugging Face incident with the strengthened monitors, the monitors raised an alert roughly half an hour after the agents broke out of their sandbox, more than 30 hours before Hugging Face was breached. OpenAI also listed gaps: paging is disabled for internal Codex traffic, and Chat Completions API requests are not covered.
Agents
A defense contractor connected a Pentagon system to a personal Claude Code account, and the agent ran on the network for two months, WIRED reports
WIRED reports, citing sources, that an Accenture contractor linked a secure system used by several intelligence agencies to a personal Claude Code account. The agent operated on the Pentagon network for two months until it was caught, and appears to have sent login credentials and a map of NIPRNet to a third-party website. Sources say Accenture did not initially report the breach, though contractors must report incidents within 72 hours. Accenture said the allegations were investigated and found to be without merit. Claude is currently barred for DOD staff.

Canada will make an equity investment of up to C$1.6 billion in Cohere, paid in stages against job and computing commitments
Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada will make an equity investment of up to C$1.6 billion in Cohere, with private backers such as Nvidia, Bell and Schwarz Group. The money will be paid in stages, with regular reporting against Cohere's commitments. In return, Cohere will create at least 1,000 Canadian technical jobs by 2030, put at least C$1.7 billion into more computing infrastructure in Canada by 2030, and keep its Canadian incorporation and headquarters. Ottawa calls it a commercial investment, and Carney framed it as a step toward sovereign AI.
